Best Outdoor Sauna Kits for Small Backyards

You’re in the market to purchase an outdoor sauna. Great choice; when done right, it can boost recovery, improve sleep, and transform your backyard into a daily wellness retreat.

But “outdoor sauna” covers a lot of ground. Between heat sources, materials, insulation, ventilation, electrical needs, and even local codes, it’s easy to overspend on features you won’t use or overlook details that matter in the long run.

As someone who has helped over 8000+ sauna builders complete their outdoor sauna projects, I have seen firsthand what matters (and what does not) when choosing an outdoor sauna for your home.

So, in this expert guide, I’ll cut through the noise and help you match a sauna to your climate, space, budget, and wellness goals. You’ll learn:

  • How to choose the right outdoor sauna type,
  • The best sauna for outdoor spaces, and
  • Their best use cases.

But before we get started…

What makes a great outdoor sauna?

A great outdoor sauna is a purpose-built system designed to deliver consistent heat, withstand the elements, and remain low-maintenance over time. When done right, it becomes both a wellness tool and an investment that pays off year after year.

Top features of a great sauna are:

  • It has equal temperatures. This keeps the whole cabin comfortable from bench to ceiling, so you don’t end up roasting the rest of your body while your feet stay cool.

  • It has enough space to lie down for two people or more and still gives you a safe distance from the heater.

  • It uses the right materials inside. Benches, walls, and trim should be made from low-resin, stable woods (or other sauna-appropriate materials) that won’t splinter, stain, or off-gas under heat and humidity.

Factors to consider before purchasing an Outdoor Sauna

1. Ensure there’s enough clearance in your backyard

When you’re working with limited space, every square foot matters, and several factors can eliminate what appears to be adequate room. The key is to understand that your sauna’s footprint is just the beginning of your space requirements.

It’s not just about fitting the structure itself; you’ll also need buffer space for safe access, ventilation, and compliance with local building codes. For example, in the city of Rosemount, MN, accessory buildings up to 200 square feet must be set back at least 7.5 feet from side property lines and 5 feet from rear property lines. Similar rules exist in many municipalities and you need to find out if yours does.

That said, plan your sauna placement with clearances in mind before you ever order a kit. Measure your available space, roof overhangs, door swing, ventilation needs, and safe access to utilities like electricity or chimney clearance in the case of wood-burning models.

2. Choose a compatible, small-sized Sauna Heater

Since you have a small backyard, you also have to consider your heater options. This is because you’re dealing with limited electrical access, proximity concerns from neighbors, and often tighter budgets that make efficiency paramount.

The good news is that smaller saunas require less heating capacity, which opens up options that might not work for larger installations.

Therefore, opt for a compatible, small-sized heater that delivers sufficient power to heat your sauna efficiently without overloading your electrical system or incurring excessive operating costs.

For guidance on selecting the right size heater for your space, check out our comprehensive 2-4 person sauna kit buying guide that covers capacity planning and electrical requirements in detail.

3. Consider the sauna wood

Material selection becomes even more critical in small backyards because your sauna will likely be more visible and subject to closer inspection from both family and neighbors. Additionally, small properties often have microclimates created by surrounding structures that can accelerate weathering if the wrong materials are chosen.

I recommend thermally modified woods, such as Thermo-Aspen and Thermo-Pine, for small backyard installations. These materials resist moisture absorption and dimensional change without requiring chemical treatment, which means less maintenance is needed in spaces where extensive wood care equipment or drying areas may not be available.

4. Build Quality

Build quality issues that might go unnoticed on larger properties become glaring problems in small backyards where the sauna is the focal point. Also, small spaces often mean limited access for repairs, making initial quality even more important for long-term satisfaction.

That said, opt for brands and builders with a proven track record for outdoor use, clear warranties, and transparent specifications.

Pay attention to details that matter in small yards: a well-sealed door with a durable threshold, service access panels for the heater and controls, and bench construction that’s easy to remove or replace.

Avoid thin “sauna-style” kits that use low-density boards and minimal framing. They save money up front but tend to sag, warp, and allow heat loss.

5. Type of outdoor sauna

There are different types of outdoor saunas, but I’ll categorize them into two, that is, by heating and shape.

By Heating Method

The heating system defines your sauna experience, maintenance requirements, and operational costs. Through my professional installations, I’ve worked with every major heating technology and can guide you through the practical implications of each choice.

  • Traditional Sauna

Traditional saunas use electric or wood-burning heaters to warm sauna stones, radiating heat throughout the cabin. This creates the classic Finnish sauna experience with temperatures ranging from 175–230°F (≈ 80–110°C) and humidity levels that can be adjusted by ladling water onto the heated stones (a practice called löyly).

In my experience, traditional heaters offer homeowners the most consistent and controllable experience. They operate at higher temperatures and promote more intense sweating, which helps you eliminate toxins faster.

  •  Infrared Sauna

Infrared saunas use light wavelengths to heat your body directly rather than warming the air around you. The operating temperatures range from 120°F to 150°F, providing a milder yet effective heating experience. This makes them more tolerable for individuals sensitive to heat.

From a technical standpoint, infrared saunas are simpler to install since they require only standard 120V electrical service. In fact, most models come pre-assembled. All you need to do is set them up following the manufacturer’s manual, and you’re good to go.

If you want a more authentic Finnish experience, go for the traditional sauna.  Anton, one of our Finnish sauna experts at The Sauna Heater,  explains why in this video

“If you value high heat, maximum relaxation, and the classic sauna vibe, go for the traditional saunas. It’s not just a way to relax; it’s tradition, a lifestyle, and a wellness powerhouse all rolled into one.”

By Shape

The shape of your outdoor sauna affects heat distribution, structural efficiency, and interior space utilization.

  • Barrel Sauna

Barrel saunas have gained popularity due to their distinctive appearance and efficient heat circulation. The curved walls naturally promote air movement, reducing heating times and improving energy efficiency.

However, barrel saunas present practical trade-offs. The curved walls limit headroom along the perimeter, which can feel restrictive for taller users.

Additionally, the bench configuration options are limited, and the round structure makes it challenging to incorporate features such as large windows or complex ventilation systems.

Anton agrees with this, too. In this YouTube Video, he explains why they’re a bad choice for Finnish Sauna Designs:

“Finnish saunas are built with one principle in mind: to create an evenly distributed heated space where you can sit with your feet above the heater. The barrel’s biggest design flaw is its limited height, which makes it difficult to follow that principle effectively.”

  • Cabin Sauna

Rectangular cabin saunas offer maximum interior space efficiency and design flexibility. The straight walls provide consistent headroom throughout the interior, allowing for varied bench configurations. This shape also simplifies insulation installation, which improves long-term energy efficiency.

From a structural perspective, cabin saunas distribute weight more evenly, making foundation requirements more predictable. They also accommodate larger windows and more sophisticated ventilation systems.

FAQs

What size backyard do I need for an outdoor sauna?

For small backyards specifically, you need to think beyond the sauna footprint to include clearances, access, and practical considerations that larger properties don’t face.

Most compact outdoor sauna kits require a minimum 10’ x 12’ area to accommodate the structure, plus the necessary clearances, but this is where small backyard planning becomes challenging.

Building code setbacks vary, too. Some municipalities require only 5-foot clearances from property lines, while others mandate 10 feet or more. In a typical small backyard, these setbacks can eliminate 50-75% of your available space, forcing the sauna into locations that might not be ideal for daily use or aesthetic appeal.

Is wood-burning or electric better for small backyard saunas?

For small backyards, go for electric heaters because they are space-saving. Wood-burning stoves require chimney clearances of 10-36 inches from combustible materials, which can often prove impossible when your sauna is situated close to homes, fences, or property lines.

How long does it take to install an outdoor sauna kit?

Installing a sauna kit typically takes 1-3 days, depending on the sauna’s size and the installer’s experience.
